Introduction

The horticulture sector encompasses a wide range of crops namely fruit crops, vegetables crops, tuber crops, ornamental crops, medicinal and aromatic crops, spices and plantation crops. New introductions like mushroom, bamboo and bee keeping (for improving the crop productivity) further expanded the scope of horticulture.

The main objective of the department is to extend Horticulture technical services to farmers and to guide farmers in implementation of new Technologies, introduction of new crops etc

Promoting local purchasing by consumers: To increase local production of fruit and vegetables. Several restraining aspects have been identified. The emerging farmers do not have the know-how to produce on a commercial scale. Those producers are in need of training.

Development of Marketing Infrastructure: All farmers experience difficulties to access the local available markets and thus development of marketing infrastructures to serve all producers will have to be developed.
